We all experience mental health. Like our physical health it changes constantly and is affected by what is happening around us. Mental health problems are common and can happen to anybody. Around 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem this year and a quarter of people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their life. In County Durham over 51,000 adults have depression and 1 in 10 of our children have a diagnosed mental health disorder. Although mental ill health can happen to any of us, there are many ways we can support our own mental health to try and stay mentally well.

Getting Advice:
5 Ways to Wellbeing: Evidence suggests there are five steps you can take to improve your mental health and wellbeing, these are known as the 5 steps to mental wellbeing.
MIND: Provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. In particular, MIND, a national mental health charity, offers advice for everyday living.
Every Mind Matters: The NHS Every Mind Matters resource, “Your Mind Plan”, helps you build a practical plan you can use to help maintain and improve your mental health and wellbeing.

NHS
- If you feel unable to cope or keep yourself safe, it’s important to get support – support is still available even if services seem busy now. You can find out where to get urgent help for mental health on the NHS website.
- Tees, Esk and Wear Valley (TEWV) NHS Foundation Trust also have a crisis line available 24 hours a day every day for people experiencing a mental health crisis. To contact the team telephone 08000 516 171, or you can find further information on What to do in a mental health crisis.
- Talking Changes services deliver counselling and self-help services in County Durham and Darlington.
- Qwell’s free, safe and anonymous mental wellbeing support for adults across the UK.

Looking after a child or young person who has emotional or mental health problems can be very hard.

There is now a freephone crisis line for those in mental distress. In a mental health emergency call 0800 0516 171 for your local crisis service.

In County Durham there is a dedicated emotional resilience team consisting of children’s psychological well-being practitioners, emotional resilience nurses/practitioners and a staff nurse. The team support with low level intervention and prevention, and aim to build resilience in our County through one to one support and group work.
