In County Durham, many families are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. Living in poverty affects all aspects of people’s lives, contributing towards poorer health outcomes, depression, low mood and feelings of anxiety. Living in poverty is stressful and may also contribute towards difficulties within family relationships. As families are struggling with day-to-day living costs, many are finding it difficult to build up savings to help cover unexpected expenses. This means that they are more likely to get into debt and fall behind with paying bills.
We would like to see families finding ways to manage their money in a way that makes sure they can feed their children and pay their bills so that all children and families have somewhere safe and secure to live.
Not being in work can also contribute towards increased levels of poverty within families. However, we recognise that poverty also affects households where someone is in work. Providing support to individuals who are not in work to help them to overcome any barriers they may be experiencing, including providing opportunities to obtain new skills and qualifications, can help them on their journey towards employment. It can also, help those who are in unstable employment.
